Exhibited: 15th July to 2nd August, 1986, Mori Gallery, Sydney.

Footnotes to the works from the exhibition room sheet.

1. Grotesque – 1. Decorative painting or sculpture with fantastic interweaving of human and animal forms with foliage; (pop) comically distorted figure or design. 2. In the above style; distorted, bizarre; ludicrous from incongruity, absurd. 3. Italian Grottesca – antique work.

2. Toward violet thus I did chide: Sweet thief, whence didst thou steal thy sweet that smells, If not from my love’s breath? The purple pride Which on thy soft cheek fro complexion dwells In my love’s veins thou hast too grossly dy’d. The lily I condemned for thy hand, And buds of marjoram had stol’n the hair; The roses fearfully on thorns did stand, One blushing shame, another white despair; A third, not red nor white, had stol’n of both, And to his robbery and annex’d the breath; But, for his theft, in pride of all his growth A vengeful canker eat him up to death. More flowers I noted, yet I none could see But sweet or colour it had stol’n from thee. (Sonnet XCIX William Shakespeare)

3. To begin – an image of, say, apposition; imploding, exploding, clustering or encasing. Then a certain propriety in working – selecting, categorizing – phylum, genus, species. A privileging of certain visual and sensual modalities, memories and narratives.
